Estimating
Earthquake Intensity
After an earthquake occurs, geologists collect intensity data by
communicating with people who were present in the area affected
by the earthquake. These people are asked about two specific
things: 1) their exact location when the earthquake occurred,
and, 2) what they experienced and saw at that location during
and after the earthquake. This information they provide is compared
with the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale and the intensity
of the earthquake is estimated for that location.
Estimating intensity is not an extremely difficult job and with
a little conscientious practice most people can obtain reasonable
results. Give it a try. When you click on the link below, a
pop-up window will appear. It will contain a sample observation
and ask you to estimate the intensity. Close the pop-up window
when you have done the three practice examples.
